PROCESS AND THE SELFIE

I have little interest in documenting the idea of physical self in my work. My subject is primarily an environment I find myself in, without intention or forethought to alter or prepare. I am interested in the happenstance way that compositions can present themselves. At times, this immediacy takes away my control or ability to separate myself from a shot. I would prefer to see this as one of many potential variables inherent to the medium as opposed to a deliberate document of self.

I only work with 35mm film, often using a point and shoot camera as they allow for a more spontaneous way to document the moment I find myself in. With no screens to monitor and no option to delete a failed attempt, film forces you to take pictures without the distraction of reviewing and editing them seconds later. Whilst an element of control is needed using film photography, I relish the uncertainty and the potential for mistakes to occur within its limitations.
